Welcome to my clinical practice!
My name is Steven Tran (he/him/Dr). I am a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY 36996) based out of the San Francisco Bay Area. I am a second-generation Vietnamese American queer man and child of refugees. I grew up in the Boston area, and I still miss the changing seasons—each one with its own lesson about change and growth (yes, even winter).
I have extensive training in evidence-based psychotherapies across various academic medical centers in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. I have specialized training in trauma, substance use disorders, and couples therapy. I utilize developmental, contextual, and trauma-informed approaches to best meet your needs and goals for a good life.
When I am not working, I enjoy gardening, cooking with friends, and connecting with my cultural roots. I value community engagement and enjoy exploring community and cultural events throughout the SF Bay Area.
Therapeutic Approach
Although my clinical work is grounded in the clinical research science and well-studied psychological theories, there is complexity and nuance that cannot always be captured within these interventions. Therefore, I am responsive, flexible, and individually tailor evidence-based practices with you in the therapy room.
Even though therapy and healing work can be difficult, I believe there’s space for playfulness, imagination, and moments of laughter and celebration along the way. I am warm and curious in understanding your lived experiences, while holding a systems lens—understanding you not in isolation, but within the relationships, culture, and context that have shaped you.
My therapeutic approach can also be direct and firm, as I hope we can balance acceptance of the moment alongside steady movement towards where you want to go.
Although there may be contradictions in how I described my therapeutic approach, I hope that you can see that holding these “dialectics,” or contradictions and multiple truths, is exactly what helps us meet the moment as it is. Our work together can reflect how these multiple truths show up everywhere in life: the past that shaped you and the future you're shaping, closeness and autonomy, acceptance of where you are and movement towards where you’re going.
